Belfast Car Hire Emergency Breakdown Procedure
What to do when a hire car stops working in Belfast or elsewhere in Northern Ireland, from moving to a safe position to arranging recovery through the rental provider.
If a hire car breaks down during a trip around Belfast or elsewhere in Northern Ireland, the first priority is to move yourself and the vehicle out of live traffic. The phone calls and the question of who pays can wait until everyone is in a safe place. Understanding how a Belfast car hire breakdown is handled makes the whole situation calmer and avoids expensive misunderstandings later.
Making the car and passengers safe
Switch on the hazard warning lights as soon as the car begins to falter, and steer towards a lay-by, side street or hard shoulder if one is close at hand. Do not stop in a live lane unless the vehicle cannot move at all.
Leave through a door that faces away from the traffic, and ask passengers to wait behind a barrier or well up the verge rather than standing beside the car. Reflective jackets are worth keeping within reach, because they are far less useful in the boot once you are on a dark road.
On a motorway, use an emergency telephone where one is available, as it identifies your position, and quote the numbers shown on the nearest marker post. Warning triangles should not be used on motorways; on ordinary roads one can be placed behind the car only if it is safe to walk there.
Before ringing anyone, note the road number, the nearest junction or landmark, and the direction you were travelling in.
Contacting the hire provider
The breakdown or recovery number is normally printed on the rental agreement and often on a tag attached to the keys. Find it before you drive away rather than searching for it at the roadside.
Ring that number first. The vehicle belongs to the provider, and arranging your own tow or repair can complicate any reimbursement, even where the fault is clearly not your doing.
Have the registration, your location, a short description of what happened and the number of people travelling ready. Ask who is dispatching recovery, roughly how long it may take, and whether onward travel or a replacement vehicle forms part of your agreement.
After the car has been recovered
Take photographs of the vehicle and its position, remove personal belongings if it is being taken away, and note the mileage and fuel level before it leaves.
Ask for a written record of the callout and keep any receipts for taxi fares or other costs agreed at the time, since these are much harder to claim afterwards.
Most breakdowns end with a jump start or a simple roadside fix. Where the fault needs a garage, staying in contact with the provider and keeping a clear record of what was agreed is what keeps the rest of the trip on track.
