Driving in Northern Ireland: Rules for Hire Car Drivers
A practical guide to the road rules that catch out visiting drivers in Northern Ireland, from speed limits and roundabouts to the drink-drive limit and city centre parking.
Northern Ireland drives on the left, signs every speed limit in miles per hour, and applies its own drink-drive limit. Drivers collecting a hire car in Belfast or at either of the city's airports will find the basics familiar, but a handful of local rules and conventions are worth knowing before pulling away from the collection bay.
Speed limits and how they are signed
Restricted roads in built-up areas are generally 30 mph, marked by street lighting and repeater signs rather than a limit plate at every junction. Outside towns, single carriageway roads default to 60 mph and dual carriageways and motorways to 70 mph. Limits are ceilings, not targets: narrow stretches, blind bends and farm traffic often make a much lower speed sensible, and unmarked police vehicles and mobile camera vans operate on rural routes as well as main roads.
Northern Ireland has an extensive motorway and dual carriageway network linking Belfast with the larger towns, but many connecting roads are single carriageway with overtaking opportunities limited to short straights. Pulling out behind a slow-moving tractor or lorry is a common cause of collisions, so patience pays.
Roundabouts, junctions and lane discipline
At roundabouts, traffic already circulating approaches from your right and has priority. Signal left to leave, and stay in the left-hand lane unless road markings direct otherwise. Larger roundabouts on the approach roads to Belfast often have traffic lights on the entrances, so watch for red lights even when the circle itself looks clear.
Some rural junctions are unmarked, with no give-way lines or signs, and the default expectation is to give way to traffic from the right. Treat these carefully, particularly on narrow lanes where two vehicles cannot easily pass. Passing places should be used to let oncoming traffic through rather than reversing long distances.
Drink-drive law, licences and documents
The legal alcohol limit in Northern Ireland is measured at 35 microgrammes per 100 millilitres of breath, or 80 milligrammes per 100 millilitres of blood. Because the margin is small, the safest approach is not to drink at all before driving. Police can stop any vehicle and require a breath test, and refusing a test is itself an offence.
Drivers need a full licence valid for the class of vehicle, and hire agreements normally require it to have been held for a qualifying period, so check the photocard before you travel and declare any endorsements honestly. Seat belts must be worn by everyone in the car, and children need the correct restraint for their height and weight. Using a hand-held phone at the wheel is illegal, including while stationary at lights.
Parking and driving in town
Double yellow lines mean no waiting at any time, while single yellow lines restrict waiting during hours shown on nearby signs. Controlled zones use pay-and-display machines or app-based payments, and parking attendants patrol regularly, so display proof of payment clearly. Bus lanes in Belfast operate at set times shown on the accompanying signs, and cameras are used to enforce them.
Keep the vehicle's registration document and insurance details in the car, note the fuel type before refuelling, and check that lighting works, since dipped headlights are needed in poor visibility and heavy rain. Returning the car with the agreed fuel level and allowing time for Belfast traffic on the way back will keep the handover straightforward.
