Belfast Car Hire Vehicle Inspection Before Collection
A short, careful inspection at the collection desk is the simplest way to protect yourself against unexpected damage charges on a hire car in Belfast.
A few minutes spent looking over a hire car before you drive it away can save a great deal of time and argument later. The handover is the moment when responsibility for the vehicle passes to you, so any existing damage should be noted on the rental agreement at that point rather than discovered at the end of the hire. Collection points in Belfast range from busy airport desks to smaller city offices, and in every case you are entitled to take your time over the check rather than being hurried along.
Walk around the exterior in good light
Start at one corner and work your way around the car in a consistent direction so that nothing is missed. Look closely at bumpers, door edges, wheel arches and the lower sections of the bodywork, which are the areas most likely to pick up scuffs in car parks. Check the alloy wheels or hubcaps for kerb damage and examine each tyre sidewall for cuts or bulges.
Glass deserves attention too: look for chips or small cracks in the windscreen, and check that mirrors and light lenses are intact. If the car has a roof rack, roof bars or a tow bar, inspect those as well. Crouching down to look along the length of the car in raking light makes shallow dents and scratches far easier to spot than viewing it from standing height.
Check the cabin, controls and equipment
Once inside, sit in the driver's seat and switch on the ignition so that the dashboard display lights up. Note the fuel level or state of charge and the recorded mileage, and check that no warning lights stay illuminated after the initial self-test. Try the things you will actually use: windows, mirrors, air conditioning, heating, radio and any phone pairing system.
Look over the seats and upholstery for stains, tears or burns, and check the boot for the parcel shelf, spare wheel or inflation kit and any tools supplied. If you requested a child seat or other extras, confirm they are present and fitted correctly before you leave.
Record the condition report accurately
The condition report is only useful if it reflects what you have actually seen. Photograph any mark you find, taking both a wide shot showing where it sits on the car and a close-up of the damage itself. Time-stamped images on a phone are perfectly acceptable and provide a clear record of the vehicle's state at collection.
Ask a member of staff to note the marks on the paperwork and to sign or initial the record. Keep your copy of the report with you for the duration of the hire, and check before returning the car that the fuel level and mileage match what was agreed.
Finally, take a moment to adjust the seat, head restraint and mirrors, and to confirm which documents remain with the vehicle. Familiarising yourself with the light and indicator stalks and the position of the handbrake or electronic parking brake before pulling away into unfamiliar Belfast traffic is a small step that makes the first few miles considerably less stressful.
