Belfast Car Hire with Additional Driver

Adding a second driver to a Belfast car hire agreement is not automatic. The named driver must meet licence and eligibility rules, and an extra-driver fee usually applies.

If you plan to share the driving on a car hired in Belfast, the additional driver must be added to the agreement before they drive. The name has to appear on the contract, and the driver must meet the hire company’s licence and eligibility rules. This applies whether you collect in the city centre or at an airport serving Belfast.

Why an additional driver must be declared

The hire agreement sets out who is insured and authorised to drive. If someone who is not listed takes the wheel, the vehicle may not be covered and the main driver could be in breach of the terms. Even a short journey to a car park counts. A named driver must be approved by the hire company and recorded on the paperwork.

Licence and eligibility checks

Additional drivers normally need a full, valid driving licence. Hire companies usually check how long the licence has been held, the driver’s age, any penalty points, endorsements or convictions, and whether the licence has the right category for the vehicle. A photocard licence is commonly required, and a licence check or share code may be requested to verify the record. Requirements vary, so check before booking rather than assuming that a licence accepted by one hire desk will be accepted by another.

How the extra-driver charge is applied

There is usually an additional-driver fee. The amount is not fixed: it can depend on the hire company, vehicle group, rental length and collection location. Some agreements charge per day, while others apply a charge per hire or a weekly cap. The fee helps cover insurance and administration, so confirm it at booking and when the contract is signed. Do not assume it is included in the main driver’s quote.

Adding a driver after collection

If a second driver is needed after collection, contact the hire office before allowing that person to drive. Some branches can amend an existing agreement, but the additional driver will normally need to attend with their licence and may be charged for the remaining hire period. If the office cannot make the change, the second driver should wait until the vehicle is returned.

Before leaving the hire desk, check that every intended driver is listed correctly and that licence details match. Ask how the additional-driver charge appears on the final bill and keep a copy of the agreement. If eligibility is unclear, resolve it before the keys are handed over; it is simpler than discovering the problem at a checkpoint, car park or return inspection.
