Driving from Belfast International Airport to the City Centre in a Hire Car

A practical outline of the main driving route from Belfast International Airport into central Belfast for hire car drivers, including motorway lane guidance, city centre rules and parking points to check on arrival.

Collecting a hire car at Belfast International Airport puts you close to the M2 motorway, and from there the route into Belfast is well signposted. Before pulling away, adjust the mirrors and seat, check the fuel or charge level, and confirm whether the car takes petrol, diesel or electricity. The airport sits in open countryside, so it is worth noting where the nearest filling station is before you set off.

Following the signs from the terminal

Leave the terminal complex following the signs for Belfast and the M2. The A57 is the road that links the airport with the motorway network, and the direction signs are repeated at each roundabout, so there is no need to rely on a satellite navigation device alone. Traffic leaving the airport mixes with local traffic heading towards Templepatrick, so watch the lane markings and leave plenty of room at the roundabouts rather than cutting across lanes at the last moment.

Once you reach the motorway, join the southbound carriageway towards Belfast and settle into the left-hand lane. British and Irish licence holders will recognise the layout, but drivers used to driving on the right should take extra care at the slip road, where traffic joins from the left and the mirror checks are reversed.

On the M2 towards the city

The M2 is a multi-lane motorway, so keep left unless you are overtaking and allow faster traffic to pass on the right. Keep a steady speed and read the overhead signs early, because the road divides as it nears the city. Traffic for the docks and the Titanic Quarter is generally directed onto the M3, while the city centre itself is reached by staying with the signs for the York Street interchange and the Westlink. Deciding which lane you need well in advance avoids abrupt changes in heavier traffic.

Congestion builds on this stretch during the morning and evening commute, so a journey planned outside those windows tends to feel much less pressured, particularly for a driver who is new to the vehicle.

Driving in the city centre

Central Belfast is compact, but it has a one-way system and a number of bus lanes. The operating hours of each bus lane are shown on signs at the point where the lane begins, and entering one during those hours can lead to a penalty, so read the plates rather than following the car in front. Cycle lanes and pedestrianised streets also require attention in the busier shopping areas.

Parking once you arrive

Multi-storey car parks are signposted around the commercial core, and on-street pay and display bays appear in some side streets. Check the height restriction before entering a barrier-controlled car park, keep the ticket somewhere visible, and read the notices for bays reserved for permit holders, loading or coaches. Note where you have left the car, including the level and bay number, as large car parks can be disorientating after a long drive.

If you are heading back to the airport later, the route largely reverses: follow signs for the M2 northbound and then the A57 for the terminal, allowing extra time during peak periods when the approach roads to the motorway are at their busiest.
